Case Study: Concentric Rotations

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

rotating platformrotating platformObjective: Create a 40’ round motion display to showcase General Motor’s hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles at press events and auto shows. The display called for three concentric rotating platforms offset around a 20’ in diameter turntable. In order to meet the aggressive timelines at which vehicles are presented at press events, each of the platforms would have to attain rotational speeds of 0-4 revolutions per minute. The system would also have to support decorative walls and supply 400 amps and video signal to a moving video wall.

Solution: We created a structural staging system with a high load capacity and married it to three of our Hubless turntables and one of our Standards. Each Hubless turntable featured three high-torque motor drives to move them at the required speeds. The Standard was equipped with a single high-torque motor drive and controlled via laptop along with its three orbiting rings. A slide contact electrical system was enlisted to deliver the signal and power needed for the video wall.

Results: General Motors rolled out its then, all new, Chevy Volt as well as its entire new hybrid and alternative fuels vehicle fleet at the LA Auto Show using the 40’ motion display. The display is currently being used as part of Chevrolet’s auto show kit exclusively at tier one major auto shows.
